Tonight after the Super Bowl NBC aired a special hour long episode of “The Office.” This valuable slot was originally slated for Amy Poehler’s new comedy project, but that obviously didn’t happen. Instead we got the next best thing, a preview. I’ll be looking for an online clip to share, but the preview featured Amy Poehler walking through a landfill and discussing her plans to clean up her town. The new Amy Poehler show has now been named: “Parks & Recreation”. And now we know.

NY Times has more details on how NBC selected the series’ title:

The name “Public Service” was considered, but was dropped in favor of “Parks and Recreation” in recent days. Why? In an e-mail message, Ben Silverman, the co-chair of NBC Entertainment, wrote: “Can’t make fun of public service! Worried because we don’t want to seem mean about it.”

So, is it safer to joke about Parks & Recreation than Public Service?
