CW To Spin-Off Gossip Girl?

Interesting news out of The CW regarding their freshman series, “Gossip Girl”. Looks like CW may already be making plans to spin off one of the semi-central characters, Jenny Humphrey played by Taylor Momsen, into her own series.

This would be a very strange move for The CW because, #1 – Gossip Girl just wrapped up just its first season. 1 season and they’re already looking at a spin off? #2 – Okay, sure it might not be too early if the series was doing well in its ratings. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either by any means. Gossip Girl certainly doesn’t have the strength to split at this point and expect either side to survive.

The Hollywood Reporter brought up an interesting point: would CW even want that spin-off? Next Fall they’ll have Gossip Girl, the 90210 remake, and the return of One Tree Hill. Is there room for yet another teen angst series?

I’m guessing this won’t happen, at least not for several more seasons to come, but kudos to The CW for putting a spotlight on their lineup.

*Update* Yeah, that was short lived, as I expected. Josh Schwartz, exec producer on Gossip Girl, released this statement to E!:

“Not sure how this got out there, but no plans for spinoff at this moment,” Schwartz tells me. “The books do have a spinoff, but we have nothing in the works right now other than making sure season two gets off to a great start.”

Thought so.
