Family Guy’s Spin-Off Details: The Cleveland Show
Last month Seth McFarlane, the creator of TV’s Family Guy, landed a $100 million contract to stay with FOX Television through 2012. Along the way he’d keep Family Guy and American Dad going, but the surprise addition was a spin-off from Family Guy with “The Cleveland Show”, which will launch in 2009.
I’m more than a little surprised that they went with the slow talking, momentarily funny character instead of Quagmire. Perhaps the censors would never let a minute of his show get released.
The New York Post offers some initial details on “Cleveland”:
The show’s setup finds Cleveland losing his wife and his house in a divorce, and leaving Quahog, R.I. with his son, Cleveland Jr. (who’ll be “aged-up” in the new show to around 14 years old).
Cleveland thinks he’s on his way to California to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a minor league baseball scout – but ends up in his Virginia hometown, instead.
“His intention is to pass through town . . . but he runs into a woman named Donna whom he carried a torch for in high school. But she never returned his love,” Henry explains.
“She has a 16-year-old daughter, Roberta, who runs in the fast lane, and a 5-year-old son named Rollo, who’s streetwise and savvy to the ways of the world.
“At the end of the pilot, Cleveland and Donna are together and have combined their kids – like ‘The Brady Bunch.’ ”
The piece goes on to discuss how Cleveland will have a family of bears living right next door, just like the way Brian, Family Guy’s talking dog, is just accepted as a talking dog. You can also see from the picture that one of Cleveland’s children will be terribly obese, much like Peter in “FG” and one of the son’s friends in “American Dad”. Apparently obesity is as funny as the well is dry in their writers pool.
