Grissom To Sign Off CSI Mid-Season
Wow, and I thought the victims in CSI were the ones supposed to be dropping like flies. Add William Petersen, who plays Gil Grissom on the CBS crime drama, to the list of series regulars who will have left the show in the last two seasons. First there was the departure of Jorja Fox after having survived the previous season’s cliffhanger. Then Gary Dourdan was assassinated at the end of this past season.
Grissom isn’t expected to meet a gruesome demise and will likely show up again for cameos, but come the 10th episode of this new season, he’ll be gone:
“Billy is leaving,” confirms the show’s executive producer, Carol Mendelsohn. “But he will remain throughout the run of the series an executive producer. And he will, whenever CBS asks, come back. I don’t think you’ve seen the last of Gil Grissom.”
Citing both his [Petersen's] ongoing role as an executive producer and his intention to return on occasion as a (very special) guest star, he said, “I’m in a great place in terms of knowing that I’ll be more free to make choices. And I’m responsible enough to not do it in a way that would hurt [the show].
This will leave just Marg Helgenberger (Catherine), George Eads (Nick), and Eric Szmanda (Greg) as the remaining core cast after eight seasons. Don’t worry, the morgue’s doc (Robert David Hall) isn’t going anywhere just yet either.
I’ve also read odd reports that Dourdan will reappear, but no idea if that’s just in a flashback state or something more soap-opera-ish.
Will you stick with CSI once its leader is gone?

Yes, I’ll stick with CSI as long as Marg is around. She’s the only reason I watch anyway. Frankly, Grissom hasn’t been a leader since he hooked up with Sara; he has just been Pod Grissom so it feels like he has already been gone for a couple of seasons already.

Good point. It has kinda felt like they were transitioning him out, especially with the higher profile position they gave Catherine. I’m interested to see how she carries the lead role.
