New Get Hard movie got mostly negative reviews from top critics. Warner Bros. Pictures released their new comedy flick, “Get Hard,” into theaters this weekend, and all the reviews are in from the top movie critics. It turns out that it didn’t sit well with most of them, getting only an overall 34 score out of a possible 100 across 41 reviews at Metacritic.com.

The movie stars: Will Ferrell, Craig T. Nelson, Kevin Hart, Tip “T.I.” Harris and Alison Brie. We’ve added blurbs from a few of the critics,below.

Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a decent 75 score, saying: ” It matches up two comic actors and instead of clashing or canceling each other out, they bring in the best possible result: A comedy with twice the laughs.”

Inkoo Kang over at TheWrap, gave it a 65, stating: ” Ferrell and Hart don’t bring anything that we haven’t seen from them before, but they create a bouncy, playfully defiant rapport. It’s promising enough that you wish they could have made a movie in which they’re just making us laugh, instead of leaving us wondering how every third scene could be made less offensive.”

Matt Zoller Seitz from RogerEbert.com, gave it a 50 score. He said: ” If you love rape jokes, Get Hard is your movie.” Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 50 as well, saying: “From its juvenile double entendre title to its fascination with prison rape and homophobic humor, “Get Hard” practically announces itself as an offensive, tired and unimaginative comedy in nearly every scene. And yet I didn’t hate it because Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart had such terrific comedic chemistry.”

John DeFore from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 50 grade, stating: ” A passably silly but lowbrow buddy comedy.” Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 42 score. He said: “Get Hard is not only a bad movie but a profoundly wasted opportunity.”

A.O. Scott at The New York Times, gave it a 40 score, saying: “The highest praise I can give Get Hard is that it is not quite as awful as it could have been.”

Tom Russo at the Boston Globe, gave it a 38 grade. He said: ” Audiences are going to want to brace themselves, too – for a movie that refuses to recognize when it’s going too far, with its wince-eliciting jokes about jailhouse rape in particular.”

Kyle Smith from the New York Post, gave it a 38 grade, saying: ” If the jokes in Get Hard were a set of Jeopardy categories, they’d read as follows: Things Will Ferrell Puts Up His Butt, Butt Rape, Shots of Will Ferrell’s Bare Butt and Satirical Comparisons of Violent and Nonviolent Crime Not Excluding Mentions of Balzac.”

Claudia Puig at USA Today, gave it a 38 grade. She said: “Get Hard is hard to sit through and hardly funny. So unless you’re really hard up for entertainment, stay away from this tone-deaf raunchfest.”

Peter Travers over at Rolling Stone, gave it a 38 score. He stated: ” It’s not easy hanging talents like Ferrell and Hart out to dry. But Get Hard gets the job done. It’s one limp noodle.”

Betsy Sharkey from the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 30 score, claiming: “Get Hard… is certainly a better name than, say, Laugh Hard, which you won’t do nearly enough.”

Justin Chang at Variety, gave it a 30 score, saying: “Whatever one makes of Get Hard’s contribution to our ongoing national debate about race, class and sexuality, there’s no denying that too much of it simply feels cheap, flailing and tired.”

Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune, gave it a 25 grade. He said: “It’s a mystery why two bona fide comic stars, working very, very hard to keep this thing from tanking, couldn’t pressure their collaborators for another rewrite or three.”

Joe Morgenstern from the Wall Street Journal, gave it a 20 score, saying: “Funny bits come along every now and then, and the co-stars work desperately hard for their salaries. But the spectacle is depressing for what it says of mainstream studio standards. Grinding on with dim humor and grim purpose, Get Hard gets ever harder to take.”

Lastly, Joe Neumaier over at New York Daily News, gave it a bad 20 as well, saying: “Get Hard isn’t edgy enough to be offensive or witty enough to be challenging. It’s just dumb.” Stay tuned.
