Last summer it was Coastal Dreams. This summer NBC has opted for a darker, more sci-fi series for its webisode focus and lucky for us, it stars Rosario Dawson (Sin City). Gemini Division is a web-only mini-series featuring a lucky-in-love girl, Anna Diaz, who at the start of the story heads off to Paris with her boyfriend Nick. Of course, things don’t go so well:
An NYPD undercover vice cop, Anna Diaz is used to walking the thin blue line between truth and fiction. One slip, her cover blown, and she could end up dead. That’s why she always keeps the world at arm’s length. That is, until she meets Nick Korda…
Nick is everything Anna ever wanted. For the first time in her life, she finally feels safe enough to lower her guard, be herself. So safe, in fact, Anna’s beginning to wonder if this guy’s too good to be true. Especially after he whisks her to Paris for a romantic getaway and pops the question. Though Anna can’t deny her feelings for Nick, she also can’t ignore those warning signs about his business, his health and his past - causing her to doubt whether or not this man is truly the person he claims to be. But before she can get the answers she needs to commit…
Whoa! Stop right there. Looks like someone at NBC forgot that we haven’t seen the whole series yet so maybe they should hold off on all those details. Ah well, I should have seen it coming.
Anyways, the series just started this week with the first two webisodes available right now here at the Gemini Division website.

Its so important for the interactive TV genre that Gemini Division puts on a good showing. This is the kind of innovative product that exploits the interactivity of the internet and changes the lean back viewing experience of traditional TV into something far more engaging. Its success would bring much needed attention to the indie interactive web scene.
Signing Rosario Dawson is a great choice, a sci-fi plot is a great choice, they’ve got a great storyteller in Brent Friedman, only thing I’m not so happy about is the staged release international (Gemini Division will be released first in the US then international by Sony). But I suspect the EFE team had a lot of breaking down walls to do in the deal making room as the vanguard.
The $1.75M budget is HUGE for the web TV world but my hope is that a nice chunk of that is allocated to marketing (and you can count Rosario’s paycheck in that) to bring attention to the nascent interactive web series genre … indies like ours (www.deletedthegame.com) will gladly ride this coat tail.
