Kevin Smith has released another poster for “Red State” because apparently fans have raised more money for charity. This is an interesting method.

Kevin Smith agreed to release a new poster from his upcoming thriller “Red State” if fans managed to donate $1,000 to The Wayne Foundation within an hour. They did and he revealed this character poster. It features “The Virgin” played by Kerry Bishe.

I’m pretty intrigued by this movie. I can’t wait for the firestorm of protests it brings along with it.

Kevin Smith Adds Jason Lee To A COUPLE OF DICKS

Now that Jason Lee is out of work thanks to NBC’s cancellation of “My Name Is Earl” he’s free to move on to things like teaming back up with Kevin Smith for the comedy “A Couple of Dicks.” The buddy-cop-comedy stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan and so far the little we’ve seen is promising.

Smith revealed this announcement earlier this week, but it should come as no surprise to fans of Lee and Smith who would remember their previous pairing on MallRats. That might have been the first and last time I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Lee’s performance.

In the video below, MTV talks with Smith about “Dicks” which is the first film he has directed that he didn’t write. Considering the past couple of Smith releases this might not be a bad idea.

First Look: A Couple of Dicks – Tracy Morgan & Bruce Willis

Here’s our first look at “A Couple of Dicks,” the latest R-comedy from Kevin Smith which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. /Film notes that they don’t remember seeing this scene in the script which raises the obvious point that Morgan likely just showed at work on his tricycle in his most comfortable cell phone outfit. Obviously.

A Couple of Dicks will hit theaters on February 26, 2010

Watchmen Wants You To Watch An Alternate Ending

Warning! Spoilers – If you haven’t yet read Watchmen, then stop reading right now. I’m serious!

Spoilers below!

After having read Watchmen earlier this summer I must admit I was a little surprised by the ending. A giant space squid teleported into New York? It was wacky, but it served the purpose of having the world united even if it was against a non-existent alien force. Now it seems that Watchmen director Zack Snyder decided to change to a more reasonable ending, but will be still be as effective?

In lieu of a giant alien squid, Ozymandias has developed a Dr. Manhattan imitating device (read: nuclear) and sets it off around the world. So you’ve got the same worldwide disaster, but it seems like a nuclear attack would just make one country accuse the other exacerbate the Doomsday Clock so prominently featured in the book.

While I may have my concerns, director Kevin Smith does not. He’s seen the rough version of Watchmen twice now and had this to say about the alternate ending:

“It’s a little different. While it is a slight departure, it actually makes sense in the context of the story because it brings the characters back into it. It kind of makes the movie more about them by the end of it because of the switch they made. I would never say that Alan Moore fucked it up or something. I love the ending of the Watchmen comic book, but I think this ending works just as well.”

That definitely makes me feel better about the changes to Watchmen’s ending. Even better is that now I know there will be something new to discover when Watchmen arrives in theaters. What about you?

Zack & Miri Make A MPAA Acceptable Poster

After continually getting pummeled by the MPAA it looks like Kevin Smith is tired of fighting over “Zack and Miri”. First Smith struggled to overturn an NC-17 rating which is a box office death sentence and won. Then in an apparent revenge move the MPAA banned Smith’s movie poster despite its less sexual approach than similar, approved movie posters. The frustration in his response is apparent:

Kevin Smith Hasn’t Seen JJ Abram’s “Star Trek”, But If He Did He Really Liked It

In one of those cases where you’re prevented from disclosing certain details about a certain thing you’ve only got so many options to leak info. Kevin Smith is in that situation after having definitely not just watched JJ Abram’s reboot for “Star Trek”. And by “definitely not” I mean “definitely did”.

TrekMovie landed the denial interview with Smith:

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

Host: Was it good?

Smith: It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith: The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Host: How do you out Shatner, Shatner?

Smith: I don’t what you are talking about.

That definitely makes me feel better about the franchise relaunch, especially with the new Kirk. After getting burned by Abrams’ last hype, “Cloverfield”, I’m still a bit cautious.

Zack And Miri Make A Non-X Rated Porno Afterall

Kudos to Kevin Smith. Following his appeal to the MPAA over the X-rating received by “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” the decision was made to lower the rating to “R”:

Motion Picture Association of America spokeswoman Elizabeth Kaltman said Tuesday the rating was revised after the group’s appeals board viewed the movie.

“We didn’t set out to make an NC-17 film. That’s just commercial suicide,” Smith told The Associated Press.

Considering the things that pass for PG-13 these days (ahem, The Dark Knight) I have to wonder if simply the subject matter alone is what pushed this one over the edge. Great news though that the MPAA “viewed the movie”. Perhaps they could have tried that the first time…
