There’s a very early poster for Alex Winter‘s remake of the the 80s horror movie “The Gate” and it looks a lot like the original poster. Even the tagline “Pray its not too late” is the same. I don’t even think the movie has began filming. If it has, it’s in the early stages. But there’s a poster. And they know it’s going to be in 3-D. So whether the new image is an homage or just an issue of time, I don’t care. It’s cool. I like the 80s feel. But I’ve had enough of the 3-D craze.

If the 1978 super controversial film “I Spit on Your Grave” gets a remake, then we’re truly in the age of remakes. What’s next, “Basket Case”?

Actually, the trailer for the new “I Spit on Your Grave” looks kind of good. And it’s unrated, so that’s probably a good sign it’s going to be as nasty as the original. I didn’t see the original until I was about 20. When I was a kid, I remember always seeing the bulky VHS box in the local video store. I never knew why there were so many warning labels on the box though. But I really wanted to see it. My mom was pretty liberal with the movies I was allowed to watch, but she never gave in with that one. And lucky me.

The footage from the trailer looks phenomenal. But I’m a little worried they’ve “Americanized” the movie too much. Meaning they’ve bastardized the quiet horror film the original was. It looks like they may have made it into a jumpy, scary, bloody vampire movie. And that’s unfortunate. The original film was a nice mixture of quiet horror and sadness. That doesn’t mean the remake won’t be good, because it looks good. I just hope it holds some of the original’s class.

I’m not a fan of remakes. And i can’t even believe what I’m about to say (for a couple of reasons), but the trailer for the reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street” was this close to making my boy parts tingle. Yeah, it looks THAT awesome. There’s no other way to put it.

For some reason, I never imagined we’d get a chance to see Freddy (Jackie Earl Haley) before the burn, but the scene with the parents chasing him down is chillingly good. And we also get a better look at Freddy’s burned face. He actually looks like a burn victim, unlike Robert Englund’s original Freddy. Haley makes a great Freddy. He might want to be careful though, he’s going to be typecast as a child molester (he also played on in “Little Children”).

What do you think? Does it look as awesome as I think it does?

A Hollywood Hills blogitorial

Movies are seriously out of control. 3-D this, remake that. Super hero this, epic fantasy that.

We’re going to become so desensitized that we won’t even be able to enjoy a movie. Or we’re going to get to the point where we think “I liked that movie well enough the first two times it was remade, so I don’t need to see a third remake just because this one is in 3-D.”

I’m barely exaggerating. You know this.

Actors hardly even act anymore. The green screen or CGI does all the work. I love special effects as much as the next guy, but what’s wrong with a simple, well-acted movie? I know they still exist, but they’re talked about less and less these days. All the movie news and blog headlines read something like this:

“Live-action My Little Pony killer robots IMAX movie green-lit”
“The Terminator being remade in 3-D and will star a CGI recreation of Marlon Brando!”
“Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Batman, AAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“Avatar to forever change cinema and cause multiple orgasms among women AND men!!!”

It’s just all becoming too much. Aren’t we stressed out enough? How are we supposed to retreat to a theater and relax when we have all these movies flying at us? It used to be we’d see a couple nice talkies a year, then be treated to one or two amazing blockbusters. And we’d go home and wait for the excitement of next year’s big summer HIT. Singular.

I hate to tell you this, but movies have peaked. Until the day we’re able to be a part of the movie we’re watching, nothing is going to truly excite us anymore. And it’s only getting worse because of all the similar movie experiences that are being delivered to us.

And remakes. What’s with them? “The Fantastic Four” is already being remade. What could they possibly give us that Chris Evans and Jessica Alba couldn’t? Well, probably a lot, but that’s beside the point.

I’m going to go relax and watch “Ordinary People” and try not to think about what’s going on in Hollywood for two hours.

What are your thoughts? Someone argue with me.

I think this is a terrible idea. I can’t even put into words how terrible it is. The only thing that could make it more terrible is if they decide to turn it into a musical. In any case, Zac Efron better be clearing his schedule.
