THE GREEN HORNET (Columbia Pictures)

Seth Rogen is known for his comedic roles in films like Superbad, Pineapple Express and Observe and Report. Seeing him as a superhero type is a bit odd, but kind of works – in the trailer at least. The Green Hornet trailer video doesn’t give us a lot, but we think we could get into the whole action/comedy nature of the film. There certainly are plenty of explosions and fight scenes to keep things rolling along. As long as they can keep the movie from tipping over into pure ridiculousness with the comedic side of things.

Seth Rogen told SuperHeroHype.com the Green Hornet movie has absolutely nothing to do with the comic books, which is probably a good thing. The Green Hornet was never the most popular comic hero and his storylines were overwhelmingly silly in our opinion.

We aren’t quite sure yet how Seth Rogen will fair as a superhero (Green Hornet Britt Reid) and we’re kind of sick of Cameron Diaz (Britt’s secretary Lenore Case), but we absolutely love Jay Chou as sidekick/brainy guy Kato.

The Green Hornet is set for release on January 14, 2001 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.

Box Office Mojo has switched the release date for “The Green Hornet” from July 9, 2010 to Dec. 17 2010. This change comes after a series of setbacks the movie has dealt with.

At first there was no explanation to why the pulp hero movie starring Seth Rogen was moved. HitFix then got in contact with Rogen who told them this:

“We’re both relieved and psyched about the change.  It gives more time for post, which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer.  It also affords us more time to promote the film, (now we can go to Comic-Con with more than a car!) and ultimately is a great vote of confidence from the studio.  We got the same date that movies like ‘I Am Legend’ and ‘Avatar’ are getting, so we’re thrilled to be there.”

So there you have it. The change would be the difference between a bad movie and a good movie.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing “Observe and Report”, Jody Hill‘s latest directorial project, since last summer when one of its stars, Collette Wolfe, mentioned it during an interview for Hill’s other film, “The Foot Fist Way.” Now with just weeks away from its wide release and following its SXSW screeners I’m even more excited to hear lots of positive reviews coming back. From the O&R trailer I’d expect nothing less.

Joe Leydon writes of “Observe and Report” following his SXSW viewing:

“Observe and Report,” writer-director Jody Hill’s shockingly and sometimes discomfortingly funny comedy about an unstable security guard who views himself as vigilant protector – and, occasionally, avenging angel – while patrolling a suburban shopping mall. Taking a setup that could have been played for sitcom jokiness and family-friendly slapstick, Hill attempts something much darker, if not downright transgressive…

With the invaluable aid of [Seth] Rogen, who’s never been better, Hill sustains an impressive degree of tension between seemingly contradictory elements. In fact, time and again throughout “Observe and Report,” it may strike some viewers that, with just a few tweaks of the script, the scenario could have been played straight as a psychological drama in the vein of “Taxi Driver”…

“Funny People” stars Adam Sandler as a dying comic who looks to Seth Rogen’s apprentice as a way for his comedy to live on. Hard to believe this is set up to be a comedy, but Apatow has often seemed to border on dramedies more than just straight up comedies. “Observe & Report” looks to squash any notion of the mall security guard foundation laid by “Paul Blart” last month. Seth Rogen’s lead character looks very dark and very funny as he attempts to bring the mall flasher to justice before he can kill off Faris’ character which isn’t going to happen, but he’s pretty sure it will.

Last week there was news that Seth Rogen’s pet project, “The Green Hornet”, had been kicked to the ditch. Rogen struck back with claims that the movie was still on track and had the full support of its studio:

Rogen is adamant the project is still going ahead, confirming the adaptation of the Bruce Lee-starring TV series should hit theatres by 2010.

He writes in an email to website HitFix.com: “The Green Hornet has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc.

“(The studio heads) have every intention on making it, and assuming we’re able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibility, it should still hit the release date.”

Yikes. No director. No sidekick actor. Sounds like things are going great. Sorry, Rogen, but as much as I’d usually be all for any of your projects, “The Green Hornet” sounds incredibly dull.
