“The Avengers”, Marvel’s answer to DC’s failed attempt at a Justice League movie, has moved one step closer to reality with officially signing on Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle. RDJ will of course be playing Tony Stark/Iron Man while Cheadle has just doubled his planned appearances as the new Jim Rhodes.

With so many successful Marvel super hero movies already out there and plenty more planned (Thor, Captain America) there will be plenty of exciting casting news for the enlistment of the good guys. But what about the villains? There had been some speculation that Hulk could end up being on the receiving end of some super hero punches, but according to a statement from Marvel that might not be the case:

“In a movie event, The Avengers will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.”

This sounds like a well planned statement and not something off the cuff from a studio exec. I’m anxious to hear more about this “biggest foe”. Who could it be?!

Update: MTV has confirmed that Jon Favreau, director of “Iron Man”, has also signed on to executive produce “The Avengers.” Awesome!

“Iron Man 2″ is set for May 2010 and “The Avengers” will debut in 2011.
