The Office Spin-Off Hires Aziz Ansari

NBC’s spin-off of “The Office” just hired its first official cast member, Aziz Ansari of “Human Giant”. There has been a ton of speculation and guessing at who will join the cast and if it will be a lead of the main show going over to start it off. The obvious choice to me was for the character of Andy now that his fiancee in the show, Angela, has gotten back with Dwight.
E! is reporting that it may actually be Rashida Jones, who played Jim’s temporary girlfriend Karen, who would lead the new cast. Karen already took off from Scranton and went to the Utica branch, so if she is the new lead I suppose it’ll all take place at Utica. I have a really hard time believing that Jones could come close to leading an Office spin-off. I enjoyed her character enough, but it wasn’t leading lady material.
In the mean time, you should start getting familiar with Aziz Ansari as it’s being told he’s now official for the January 2009 launch of the new series. Here’s a clip of “Human Giant” with Aziz helping out in an interview. I can only hope his application to join The Office went something like this:
