In his search for the return to stardom Tom Cruise is considering a role in an untitled romantic comedy (though previously known as “Wichita” and “Trouble Man”) opposite Cameron Diaz. Neither Cruise nor Diaz have officially signed on, though they worked together in 2001’s “Vanilla Sky.”

Currently attached to direct the officially lead-less is James Mangold who previously directed “3:10 to Yuma” and “Walk the Line,” both of which were very good and make me question why he’d do this.

Story revolves around a woman who has terrible luck with men but finds her path intertwined with that of a mysterious handsome man she meets on a blind date.

The studio has been sweet on the two-hander for some time. Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes were attached last year along with director Tom Dey, but that incarnation fizzled. The script was originated by Patrick O’Neill, and prior drafts have been done by [Scott] Frank and Dana Fox, who wrote the Diaz starrer “What Happens in Vegas” for Fox.

Frank is currently working on a rewrite which would lead me to speculate that neither star would go official until they knew what they were getting into. Hopefully, for them at least, it’s a strong rewrite because I watched about 30 seconds of “What Happens in Vegas” and it was not something I’d ever want to do again.
