I haven’t even had a chance to whine about how terrible “Transformers 2″ was yet! Despite having no script, director, or even stars attached Paramount and Dreamworks have officially announced their plans to premiere “Transformers 3″ on July 1, 2011:

It’s the first word of the three-quel, although Paramount insiders downplayed the importance of the move.

They said the studio wanted to claim the date before a competitor did, considering that the 2011 summer release calendar is filling up.

No deals have been inked with director Michael Bay or franchise stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. Nor has a writer been hired for the third installment.

The big-budget franchise has fast tried to claim the July Fourth holiday frame as its own. “Transformers” opened on July 3, 2007; “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” bows on June 24, 2009, one week before the holiday.

So far, “Transformers 3″ has no direct competition on its July 1, 2011, date.

Yeah, no direct competition, but Michael Bay’s inevitable one-dimensional crapfest (crap can only transform into more crap) will face some stiff challenges from the world of Marvel. Last week Marvel announced their shift in plans with their upcoming franchise launches which will include “Thor” in June 2011 and “Captain America” in July 2011, full details here. This date will give “Thor” a few weeks to shine before T3 and T3 will have the same breathing room before “Captain America” hits the ground.

It’s gonna be a busy summer in 2011.

Update: Michael Bay says no way to the July 2011 date:

“Paramount made a mistake,” Bay wrote on his blog. “They asked me on the phone, (and) I said yes to July 4 (weekend) — but for 2012. Whoops, not 2011! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.”
