The summer blockbuster season continues with another massive movie debut with “Star Trek” earning over $72 million this weekend with an extra $4 million for its early debut on Thursday night. While $72 million is impressive and it still fell short of “Wolverine’s” earnings last week of over $87 million.

Next weekend we’ll have the “Da Vinci Code” sequel with “Angels & Demons” so I think there’s a good chance the money will continue to run high for awhile longer.

Domestic box office movie earnings this weekend, May 8 – 11, 2009:

  1. “Star Trek” $72.5 million [$76.5M total]
  2. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” $87 million [$129.6M total]
  3. “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” $10.4 million [$30.2M total]
  4. “Obsessed” $6.6 million [$56.2M total]
  5. “17 Again” $4.4 million [$54.1M total]
  6. “Next Day Air” $4.0 million [$4.0M total]
  7. “The Soloist” $3.6 million [$23.5M total]
  8. “Monsters vs. Aliens” $3.3 million [$186.8M total]
  9. “Earth” $2.4 million [$26.0M total]
