“American Beauty”, “Jarhead”, “Revolutionary Road.” What do all of these Sam Mendes movies have in common? Hilarious comedy! Wait, no they don’t. Mendes isn’t known for his comedies but he’s looking to change that with his latest project, “Away We Go.”

Away We Go is a contemporary comedy directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. The movie follows the journey of an expectant couple (John Krasinski of The Office and Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live), as they travel the U.S. in search of a place to put down roots and raise a family.

Rounding out the cast are Jeff Daniels, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton, Allison Janney, Melanie Lynskey, Chris Messina, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider. Away We Go is produced and co-financed with Focus by Big Beach.

Okay, that has to be one of the most surprising cast mixes ever for a Mendes film, but so far I’m interested. Check out the trailer below or stop by Yahoo! Movies to see it there.

Away We Go comes our way June 5, 2009 with limited release.
